After 10 years of “We can do it,” Europe stands on the brink in security-policy terms!

On the tenth anniversary of former Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel’s historic “Wir schaffen das” (“We can do it”) remark, Mary Khan, MEP of the ESN Group and full member of the LIBE Committee, declares:

“Since the beginning of illegal mass immigration in 2015, around 9 million asylum applications have been filed in the EU. The number of illegal entrants who go unrecorded is likely considerably higher. This wave of migration has subjected Europe to a total system shock whose consequences the European population still has to bear today—from sharply increased security problems to overburdened social systems.

However, there is still no sign of a political change of course: effective protection of the external borders still does not exist; the Entry/Exit System (EES), which was supposed to record all entries and exits as early as 2022, still has not been fully implemented; and the Dublin rules, under which asylum applications are to be processed exclusively in the first European country of entry, continue to be ignored. Cooperation with third countries such as Turkey or African states has proven to be an inefficient multi-billion fiasco; asylum procedures remain too slow and are further blocked by an excessively ideological interpretation of the human rights convention by European courts; and even with a negative asylum decision, fewer than one in five illegal immigrants is actually deported.

Instead of rolling out the red carpet for illegal mass migration, what is needed now more than ever is a strict ‘No-Way’ policy: this includes deliberately reducing the attractiveness of seeking asylum here, temporarily suspending the right to asylum, establishing departure centers, launching a large-scale deportation drive, and installing physical fortifications at the external borders. In addition, a substantial increase and a change of mandate for the EU border protection agency Frontex is required, which by now functions more like a welcoming committee for illegal immigrants instead of effectively protecting the external borders. Only with such measures can Europe’s identity be preserved and the population’s security be sustainably ensured.”
