EU Power-Grid Report: Cost Explosion, Centralism and Denial of Reality

Today in Strasbourg, the European Parliament will vote on the report “Electricity Grids: The Backbone of the EU Energy System.” The draft calls for more than two trillion euro in investments in Europe’s power grids by 2050, proposes stronger centralisation of grid planning at EU level and introduces new rules on grid integration. Markus Buchheit, MEP for the ESN Group, comments:

“What is being sold here as a vision of the future turns out to be a gigantic subsidy- and bureaucracy-monster. The bill ends up with families, craftspeople and industry, while Brussels offers no guarantee of security of supply, stable prices or genuine technological openness. By 2030 alone, 584 billion euro are to be spent—a self-service buffet for lobby groups, paid for by electricity customers and small businesses.

With the planned EU-wide steering, the Commission ignores the very different starting situations in the Member States. Anyone who plans grids detached from reality creates new dependencies on volatile generation, forces energy-intensive companies to relocate and drives prices even higher. Instead of allowing truly technology-neutral competition, the next green panacea is being imposed—accompanied by mountains of reporting obligations.

After the recent large-scale blackout on the Iberian Peninsula, it should be obvious to everyone that security of supply and economic prudence must take priority. Yet instead of learning lessons, Brussels is opting for even more regulations, centralism and wishful thinking. We categorically reject this report—in the interest of citizens, Europe’s industrial future and the sovereignty of the Member States.”
