“The best deportation system remains ineffective if ever more illegal migrants continue to stream into Europe without end. Consistent protection of the EU’s external borders is therefore an indispensable first step to sustainably curb the migration catastrophe. At the same time, when establishing deportation centers in third countries, the creation of processing centers must under no circumstances be abandoned, so that potentially illegal migrants complete the entire procedure after filing an asylum application outside the EU. To prevent the centers from becoming overcrowded, there must also be a significantly accelerated expansion of fast-track procedures directly at the EU’s external borders.
However, the logistical hurdles of return centers in countries such as Uganda must not be underestimated. It is hardly conceivable that the Commission is planning a serious deportation offensive if people first have to be flown roughly 7,000 kilometers, only to then wait there for their return to their countries of origin. Countries in immediate proximity to the EU’s external borders would be far better suited, and a responsible Commission would have long since enforced the necessary agreements for this, if necessary by threatening to halt development aid and other support measures.”
