On the occasion of today’s public hearing of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Tax Matters (FISC) on the removal of tax obstacles in the single market, AfD MEP Siegbert Droese, member and coordinator in FISC, warns of a gradual centralisation of tax policy at EU level.

“Under the pretext of simplification and the removal of alleged obstacles in the single market, the European Commission has for years been pushing a de facto harmonisation of direct corporate taxation. This undermines the tax sovereignty of the Member States and restricts their ability to design competitive tax systems tailored to their locations. This poses a particular risk to small and medium-sized enterprises, as they are additionally burdened by new, complex EU requirements. More EU involvement in tax policy means, in practice, more bureaucracy, higher costs and less sovereignty, democracy and entrepreneurial freedom. The fact is also that the EU, like many of its Member States, including Germany, has not a revenue problem but a spending problem!”
