Commenting on this, Siegbert Droese, MEP of the ESN Group, stated:
“Once again, the EU is leaving its citizens out in the rain. While airlines are relieved of 85 percent of compensation payments, travelers and businesses are being burdened with ever-increasing levies. In Germany alone, the rise in aviation taxes and other fees will amount to an additional 1.2 billion euros in 2025 — overall, state-imposed levies now add about 30 euros per ticket, with taxes reaching up to 70.83 euros for a single long-haul flight.
But that’s not all: our airlines are already paying around 70 euros per ton of CO₂ in the European Emissions Trading System — and from 2026, all free allowances will be phased out. Ultimately, it is families and commuters who foot the bill for this green ideology.
The EU is hitting travelers twice: slashing consumer compensation and making flying more expensive with ever new charges — clearly because this mode of transport does not fit their climate dogma.
As the AfD delegation, we will fight in the European Parliament to ensure that the current level of protection remains intact, that ticket taxes are reduced, and that unilateral green burdens are abolished. Those who destroy mobility destroy freedom and prosperity — and we will not accept that.”
