ADAC betrays motorists: CO₂ surcharge makes mobility more expensive and weakens Europe’s economy

Commenting on the ADAC’s support for a CO₂ surcharge on petrol and diesel, Member of the European Parliament Volker Schnurrbusch said:

“The ADAC’s support for an additional CO₂ surcharge on petrol and diesel is an affront to millions of motorists and commuters. This price increase does not hit abstract ‘polluters’ — it hits workers, families, tradespeople, and small and medium-sized businesses in very concrete terms. Rising fuel costs act like a special tax on mobility and work: they make transport more expensive, increase production costs, and push inflation even further. In the end, consumers and businesses foot the bill — with real losses in prosperity and a further weakening of Europe’s competitiveness.

In rural areas in particular, there is no realistic alternative to the car. A politically imposed CO₂ price punishes people for living realities they did not choose. Instead of ideologically driven price-hike policies, we need affordable energy, technology-neutral innovation, and an industrial policy that keeps value creation in Europe. Anyone who artificially restricts mobility endangers jobs, investment, and social cohesion. That the ADAC of all organizations supports this course is economically irresponsible and socially blind
