EU housing plan misses the root cause of the crisis — preserve national responsibility

Commenting on the plan for affordable housing presented yesterday by the European Commission, Member of the European Parliament Irmhild Boßdorf said:

“The housing crisis in Europe is neither a natural phenomenon nor a market failure — it is home-made. Decades of overregulation, bureaucratic hurdles, and ever new requirements have massively slowed down housing construction. At the same time, continued legal and illegal mass migration is significantly increasing pressure on housing markets — with the result that locals are increasingly disadvantaged in the search for housing. Anyone who wants to create affordable housing must first and foremost effectively protect Europe’s external borders!”

Volker Schnurrbusch, substitute member of the Committee on the Housing Crisis, added:

“The European Commission is presenting an action plan even though it itself acknowledges that housing construction does not fall within its remit. Climate-protection-ideology-driven requirements in particular, such as excessive insulation and building standards, continue to drive costs up and make home ownership and renting nearly unaffordable for young families. A European housing plan cannot solve the crisis — what is needed is a correction of the EU’s own anti-business and anti-citizen policies. Housing construction must remain a national task — without additional EU вмешательства and without new bureaucratic burdens!”
