EU court strips power from states – the asylum system becomes a one-way street!

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) today significantly tightened the requirements for classifying safe countries of origin. States may only declare countries “safe” if they disclose the sources on which this assessment is based and ensure that the entire population of the country concerned can in fact live there without danger. Mary Khan, Member of the European Parliament for the ESN Group, explains:

“The CJEU has effectively declared returns to so-called safe countries of origin inadmissible—if a migrant merely credibly claims that they personally face a threat there. This is a legal blank check for the continued stay of illegal migrants. Anyone who rules this way ultimately turns the asylum system into a one-way street and strips national asylum authorities of their powers. For us in the AfD it is clear: the definition of safe countries of origin must lie with the Member States—not with the EU judges in Luxembourg!”
