In the plenary debate on the report on the rule-of-law conditionality regime, Alexander Jungbluth, budgetary spokesman for the ESN group, condemned the mechanism as an authoritarian instrument. The EU conditionality mechanism is not a neutral tool, but a political means of pressure that is deliberately used against conservative governments such as Hungary. Under the pretext of the rule of law and budgetary discipline, it serves ideological influence and the concentration of power in unelected EU institutions.
ESN European politician Alexander Jungbluth said in today’s plenary speech:
“The conditionality mechanism is a tool of political blackmail in the hands of an out-of-touch Brussels elite. Instead of promoting unity, the mechanism violates the sovereignty of the member states and deepens the divisions within the European Union.”
The ESN group calls for the abolition of the conditionality mechanism, as it itself violates the fundamental principles of the rule of law and democracy.
