This so-called “joint declaration”, expected to be formally signed by Friday, will see both sides walk back previously announced tariffs. But behind the staged compromise lies the simple truth that Europe gave in, again, under pressure.
Presented as a balanced outcome, this deal in fact reflects a growing asymmetry in the transatlantic relationship. At every stage of the negotiation, European interests have been sidelined.
One of the reasons behind Europe’s weakened position in this negotiation lies in its short-sighted trade policy. By unilaterally cutting off key markets in the East, the EU has increased its dependency on partners who do not hesitate to use economic pressure. This strategic imbalance undermines our industrial resilience.
The ESN Group calls for a realistic reassessment of the EU’s external trade policy. Europe must diversify its partnerships, defend its long-term interests, and regain room to manoeuvre on the international stage.
For months, the ESN Group has been warning about the path chosen by the Commission. We were the only group to vote, by near unanimity, in favour of a motion of censure to put an end to this submissive approach.
We do not blame Mr. Trump for defending the American people. We regret that no one here is defending ours.
The ESN Group urges a profound reorientation of the EU’s trade and foreign policy.
