Trade agreement with India opens up new export prospects

The European Commission and India have signed a trade agreement in New Delhi. The agreement provides, among other things, for tariff reductions and market openings. Before it can enter into force, it still requires legal review and ratification by the competent institutions.

Markus Buchheit, ESN Group MEP and member of the Committee on International Trade (INTA), commented as follows:

“The new agreement offers Germany, as an exporting nation, significant opportunities, particularly in the automotive sector and for machinery components. It is also welcome that imports of Indian food products will continue to be strictly regulated and that sensitive European agricultural sectors will remain fully protected. It is important that, in the further process, it is made clear that this should be a trade agreement, not an immigration agreement. While joint research is a core concern of the AfD, there must be no wage-driven immigration into the German labour market.

With its growing industry, a young working-age population, and rising demand for high-quality industrial products, the Indian market offers substantial sales opportunities for German and European companies. However, for this trade agreement, as well as future trade agreements, to be successful at all, our industry and our entire economy must be freed from ideological constraints such as the Green Deal, pointless CO₂ requirements, and excessive bureaucracy.”
