Suicide by installments: The energy embargo against Russia is ruining Europe’s competitiveness

The ESN Group in the European Parliament warns of the consequences of a full energy embargo against Russia. Despite declining gas imports, Europe remains dependent on Russian energy—indirectly via third countries. In the Group’s view, turning away from affordable energy threatens Europe’s industrial future, especially Germany’s.

ESN MEP Markus Buchheit explains:

“Europe must not continue maneuvering itself into an ideological dead end. Instead of importing expensive LNG that ultimately comes from Russian sources anyway, the EU needs a pragmatic strategy to secure its energy supply, economic stability, and industrial strength. A realignment of energy policy is the prerequisite for economic recovery and security of supply. Symbolic measures cannot protect Europe’s prosperity—only a policy based on security of supply and competitiveness.”
