In southern Spain, near the town of Adamuz in the province of Córdoba, two high-speed trains collided on Sunday evening after one of the trains derailed and ended up on the opposite track. Many people lost their lives.

ESN MEP and deputy member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism, Siegbert Droese, said:

“We were deeply shocked to learn of the serious train accident in Spain. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those injured. In these difficult hours, we extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved. We also thank the emergency services on the ground for their swift and selfless response.

Such tragedies painfully remind us how important safety, maintenance, and clear responsibilities are in rail transport. Especially at the European level, there must be no compromises on these points. Protecting human lives must always take priority over ideological prestige projects, bureaucracy, and austerity pressures.”
