S&D boycotts LIBE debate on Islamic extremism – turning a blind eye to security realities

For 18 March 2026, a debate on “Impact of Islamic extremism on the European way of life” is scheduled in the LIBE Committee. Birgit Sippel of the S&D Group has announced that she will boycott the discussion, claiming it would stigmatise Muslim communities.

Mary Khan, ESN MEP and member of the LIBE Committee, commented:

“Anyone who boycotts a democratically agreed debate is ducking their responsibility. We urgently need an open, factual discussion at EU level about Islamist extremism as a real ideology and security threat.

Europe is facing attacks, radicalisation and a massive need for protection in public spaces. Christmas markets are being turned into high-security zones, and security services are issuing constant warnings about Islamist networks.

That is the reality. If the S&D Group is already trying to block even a discussion of these facts, that is not anti-discrimination – it is a shameful refusal to face up to the problem.”
