Pete Hegseth Announces His Absence from Key NATO Meeting on Ukraine Aid

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will not attend an important meeting of international defense officials today aimed at coordinating military assistance to Ukraine. This marks a significant shift in U.S. engagement.

The announcement comes just days after a Ukrainian drone strike on five Russian airbases, which reportedly damaged 41 strategic Russian bombers. The estimated damage exceeds 6 billion euros.

So far, the White House has not commented on the attack, merely stating that it had no prior knowledge of it.

Commenting on this, Siegbert Frank Droese, an alternate member of the European Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee, stated:

“The Roman statesman and orator Marcus Tullius Cicero once said: ‘By keeping silent, you cry out loudly!’

The absence of Defense Secretary Hegseth from today’s meeting could be an indication that U.S. cooperation with Ukraine is at risk unless all parties commit to peace negotiations.

It seems highly unlikely that the United States will continue to support a conflict driven primarily by Europeans and the British indefinitely.

The EU should bear in mind that its recent increase in defense spending will, at best, make Europe only theoretically independent of U.S. military support.

We should now be open to ending a conflict that our strategic allies already deem unwinnable.”
