A cross-party alliance of Members of the European Parliament has gathered the required number of signatures to table a motion of censure against the European Commission under Article 234 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and Rule 131 of Parliament’s Rules of Procedure. The initiative is not aimed at individual Commissioners; rather, it targets serious failings in transparency and budgetary oversight — in particular the violations found by the Court of Justice of the European Union regarding the Commission’s refusal to disclose text messages between President Ursula von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla.
The motion will be formally submitted to Parliament’s Bureau so that it can be placed on the agenda of the next Conference of Presidents on Wednesday, 2 July. The ESN Group actively supported the signature drive, contributing decisively to the effort’s success.
René Aust, MEP and Chair of the ESN Group, declared:
“The Court of Justice of the European Union has determined that the Commission unlawfully concealed vital information. Taxpayers’ money is being used in an arbitrary, unlawful and reportedly corrupt manner. By backing this motion of censure we are making it clear: no one is above the law. It is time to send Mrs von der Leyen into an undeserved retirement — so that she can attend to her court cases.”
