Euro introduction in Bulgaria: ESN group criticizes Brussels’ coercive course

The introduction of the euro at the turn of the year in Bulgaria is meeting with unanimous criticism from the ESN group. The group cites serious concerns related to democracy, the economy, and national sovereignty.

René Aust, MEP, warns of the consequences for the stability of the euro area and the interests of taxpayers in the core countries:

“Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro is not a gain in stability, but a political elite project at the expense of clear liability rules, fiscal discipline, and national responsibility. Germany bears the risks while Brussels forces integration without ensuring genuine economic convergence.”

In Bulgaria, broad public resistance to the euro’s introduction has been building for months. Bulgarian MEP Rada Laykova emphasizes the clear will of the people and sharply criticizes the EU’s approach:

“The euro is being forced on Bulgaria against the resistance of the population. Brussels is pushing through centralist dictates, disregarding the sovereign, and depriving Bulgarians of control over their currency, their purchasing power, and their economic future.”

The ESN group is calling for a return to democratic legitimacy, economic reason, and national self-determination. European integration can only endure if it is based on citizens’ consent, real convergence, and respect for the sovereignty of the member states.
