The agreement between the European Union and Ukraine on road freight transport, currently under revision, is a proposed amendment to the existing treaty from 2022. The original purpose of the agreement was to grant Ukrainian transport companies easier access to the EU internal market, particularly to facilitate the export of Ukrainian goods to EU member states.

Commenting on this, ESN MEP Siegbert Droese stated:

“We have proposed the following revisions to the agreement:

-Effective controls at Ukrainian border crossings and on major transport routes through a strong police presence.

Continuous inspection of the technical condition of incoming vehicles.

Digital monitoring must also be ensured through comprehensive electronic document verification.

It is crucial that the EU finally takes clear measures to prevent market distortions caused by mass imports from Ukraine and to ensure that Ukrainian trucks transport only civilian goods.

We therefore state clearly: The interest in road safety and the quality of goods must finally be safeguarded for German and European consumers!”
