The European Commission has proposed tightening the emissions trajectory enshrined in the EU Climate Law, aiming for a 90 percent reduction by 2040. According to current calculations by the chambers of industry and commerce, up to 1.2 million jobs could be at risk in Germany, while businesses face additional costs of around 15 billion euros by 2030. ESN Group MEP Markus Buchheit commented:

“When even the chambers of industry and commerce sound the alarm and warn of millions of threatened jobs, it is high time to end this course. The spectre of moralistic activism has reached parliamentary benches—from climate-gluers to ideologues who ignore real-economic consequences.

We need performance capability, openness to technology and industrial-policy sovereignty—not further multibillion-euro burdens that drive our production away and impoverish our citizens.”
