The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has lifted a temporary suspension of the deportation of a criminal and illegal Syrian whom Austria wants to deport to his country of origin. Mary Khan, a Member of the European Parliament for the AfD and a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), sees this as a starting signal for a large-scale European deportation offensive to Syria and is calling on the German federal government to do the same:
“Already with the lifting of numerous EU sanctions against Syria, as well as the oversized aid package of 2.5 billion euros, the political framework would have been in place to consistently return Syrian asylum seekers to their homeland. But European courts repeatedly prevented exactly this through an excessive and ideologically driven interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights.
It is also clear, however, that the discussion must not be limited to symbolic individual deportations. This may be in line with European governing parties and their media staging, but it does not reflect the majority will of the population for a restrictive asylum policy. By now at the latest, a large-scale deportation offensive to Syria must therefore be initiated. After all, there are still around one million Syrians in Europe who are urgently needed for the reconstruction of their country. In Germany, by contrast, they represent a permanent burden on our asylum system, our social systems, and not least our internal security.”
