Commission backpedals on agricultural policy – but ideological climate rules remain in place

The EU Commission plans to ease key elements of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and promises to reduce bureaucracy for European farmers. What may seem like a course correction at first glance is, in reality, an admission of political failure.

Arno Bausemer, Member of the European Parliament for the ESN Group and member of the Agriculture Committee, explains:

“For years, the Commission has systematically destroyed European agriculture through overregulation. Countless farmers have had to give up their farms – not due to a lack of performance, but because of an ideologically driven agricultural policy from Brussels. Now, the Commission is being tripped up by its own policies. The fact that measures such as GAEC standards are now to be watered down shows just how misguided the previous course was.

Despite the planned relief measures, the Commission’s overall direction remains questionable. Even the Directorate-General itself warns of the loss of oversight capabilities, and ideologically motivated climate regulations continue to play a central role in the agricultural sector.

Questionable steps such as the proposed tariffs on fertilizer imports from Russia further demonstrate that the EU Commission is not genuinely concerned with safeguarding European agriculture. Our farmers depend on this affordable fertilizer to maintain their competitiveness and must no longer be used as pawns in senseless political proxy wars.

Tinkering with a few minor adjustments is not enough when the ideological foundation remains intact. As long as climate ideology takes precedence over practical solutions, nothing will fundamentally change for Europe’s farmers.”
