Petr Bystron, an MEP for the ESN Group and a full member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, commented:
“The invitation of Hillary Clinton to the MSC is an affront to Marco Rubio and the entire Trump administration. The former US Secretary of State has for years stood for an aggressive, interventionist foreign policy. During her time in office, the United States attacked Libya and continued the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Together with former Polish Defence Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, she is set to usher in a rift between Europe and the United States under the title ‘The West – West Divide’. Her invitation undermines Donald Trump’s peace efforts.
The invitation of former politicians without democratic legitimacy as ‘experts’, while at the same time excluding important countries as well as representatives of opposition parties, reveals the MSC’s attempt to influence public opinion and current political decision-making processes through a one-sided discourse. In the current tense global situation, this is extremely dangerous. What was once an important forum where Europe’s foreign-policy direction was fiercely debated has degenerated into a platform for proponents of war and promoters of the military-industrial complex.”
