The European Commission is planning to introduce an annual mandatory inspection for all cars older than ten years. The aim of this measure is to improve road safety. However, the proposal still needs to be approved by the European Parliament and the EU member states before it can come into effect. Regarding this, ESN MEP Siegbert Droese stated:
“This proposal is yet another attack on the freedom and prosperity of our citizens. Instead of providing relief, it imposes an additional financial burden. Those who cannot afford a new car will be the ones punished by this measure.
It is unacceptable that the European Commission continues to harass citizens with ever more regulations and restrict individual mobility. Existing regulations are sufficient — this is a blatant attempt to push a green agenda under the guise of road safety and to further restrict individual mobility.
We call on the EU institutions to immediately withdraw this proposal, and we will vote against this senseless initiative in Parliament.”
