Blackout in Spain and Portugal: No Security of Supply Without Controllable Energy Sources

On April 28, 2025, an unprecedented power outage occurred across the entire Iberian Peninsula. Millions of people in Spain and Portugal were left without electricity for hours. The cause was the high proportion of solar power in the Spanish energy grid.

Markus Buchheit, Member of the European Parliament from the ESN Group, commented:

“The blackout in Spain and Portugal is a wake-up call for all of Europe. The energy transition must not come at the expense of supply security. Supply security and system stability must be top priorities. Ideological considerations must not be placed above the fundamental need for a secure power supply. From our point of view, it is therefore urgently necessary to thoroughly and promptly review grid stability and existing reserve capacities in Germany and Europe to identify potential weaknesses early and minimize the risk of widespread blackouts. Only with flexible and controllable large-scale power plants can we ensure that the power system functions reliably, even with highly fluctuating input from renewable energy sources, and that peak loads can be safely absorbed.”

ESN MEP Anja Arndt added:

“The excessive expansion of wind and solar energy is directly responsible for this blackout and must be stopped immediately in our country as well. We need to return to a reliable, baseload-capable energy supply – for the safety of our citizens in Germany and the entire European Union.”
