“The conviction of the non-binary far-left extremist Maja T. to eight years in prison by a Budapest court rightly sends an unambiguous message: Anyone who deliberately attacks people with hammers, batons and pepper spray is committing the most serious violent crime, regardless of ideological motives. All the more disturbing is the blatant double standard in the European Parliament. The immunity of the far-left extremist Ilaria Salis, who was also involved, continues to be upheld, with the backing of left-wing and socialist MEPs as well as parts of the EPP. The very institution that constantly demands the rule of law is thereby downplaying left-wing violence. Parliamentary immunity must never become a shield for extremists. Anyone who beats people up is not an activist but a perpetrator!”
