Mercosur, motion of censure and the key votes of the week

One of the main topics of this plenary week was the EU-Mercosur agreement. While European farmers were protesting outside Parliament, intense debates took place inside.

Vote of No Confidence against Ursula von der Leyen

For the fourth time, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen faced a motion of censure. It failed mainly due to ideological reflexes on the left – despite the fact that these same parties have previously initiated such motions themselves. The repeated votes clearly show how little trust she enjoys in Parliament. Our position remains clear: von der Leyen and this Commission must go.

Strong Passenger Rights Defended ✈️

Good news from Parliament: MEPs stood firm in defence of strong air passenger rights and rejected attempts by the Commission and Council to weaken them. Airlines are under pressure from the Green Deal, excessive regulation and new taxes – but consumers must not be the ones to pay the price.

AgoraEU / CERV Programme

The ESN Group strongly criticises the planned €3.6 billion for the new AgoraEU programme. Instead of genuine democracy support, the expanded CERV fund serves as an ideological financing tool for left-green NGO networks. We demand these funds be cut from the next Multiannual Financial Framework and redirected towards real challenges such as fighting inflation and strengthening competitiveness.

The Knafo Report – a Political Trick

The report on European digital sovereignty and digital infrastructure, drafted by ESN MEP Sarah Knafo, was substantively complete, well-balanced and widely acknowledged as a solid basis. It was meant to be adopted and used as such. However, the fact that an ESN representative authored a key report was unacceptable to left-to-centre parties. Their response was a calculated trick: they rewrote the report through massive amendments and forced a formal re-vote, keeping the content they wanted while effectively stripping the original rapporteur of her role – without officially removing her.

👉 Once again, this week showed why a strong ESN Group matters in the European Parliament.
