This week in Strasbourg: chemicals package, 2026 budget, GDPR reform

Our MEPs stood firm against the growing centralisation of powers in Brussels — defending sovereignty, accountability, and the freedom of Member States.

Chemicals Package – Science under Brussels Control

The so-called Chemicals Package transfers key regulatory and scientific competences to EU agencies. ESN voted ❌ against this attempt to replace national expertise with centralised bureaucracy. Europe needs competitiveness, not layers of administration.

EU Budget 2026 – Spending without Discipline

The 2026 draft budget raises EU expenditure by 3.9%, even as citizens face inflation and debt. ESN opposed this budgetary drift and called for strict discipline, transparency, and the end of new EU taxes.

GDPR Enforcement – Data Centralisation, Not Protection

Behind the reform of the General Data Protection Regulation lies a new power grab by the Commission. ESN rejected this move to sideline national data authorities. Privacy must remain under democratic national oversight.

Driving Licence Directive – Digital Control without Safety

ESN opposed the new directive introducing digital licences, EU-wide driving bans, and extra costs for citizens. Together with other centre-right MEPs, we stopped proposals such as mandatory medical checks for elderly drivers. We defend personal responsibility and national competence, not a European control state.

Cutting red tape for Europe’s SMEs: ESN delivers

Thanks to ESN’s efforts, the new Omnibus Regulation revising the CSRD and CSDDD introduces key changes that will significantly ease reporting burdens for many small and medium-sized enterprises across Europe. This marks a potential turning point — shifting the focus from symbolic green regulation to practical, tailored rules that aim to support both competitiveness and sustainability.

Sakharov Prize 2025 – A Tribute to Freedom of Thought

The European Parliament awarded the 2025 Sakharov Prize to Andrzej Poczobut and Mzia Amaglobeli. ESN congratulates them — yet our thoughts remain with Charlie Kirk, our nominee, who defended freedom of speech with courage and conviction.

ESN’s Vision
