Von der Leyen’s attack on Hungary is a frontal assault on national sovereignty!

After the recent amendment to Hungary’s constitution—which includes a ban on public Pride events—European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen yesterday admonished Hungary to uphold fundamental rights and demanded that the planned Pride parade go ahead this Saturday in Budapest. Mary Khan, MEP for the ESN Group and full member of the LIBE Committee, comments:

“Once again the European Commission oversteps its remit and interferes in domestic affairs—an egregious violation of the sovereignty of a democratically legitimate Member State. Prime Minister Orbán’s unequivocal reply—that decisions about Hungary’s streets are not made in Brussels—deserves not only recognition but broad European backing. More leaders must firmly resist the escalating moral pressure and ideological power-grabs of the EU elites.

The supposed fight for tolerance has long been misused as a weapon against conservative values, religious identity and cultural self-determination. Anyone who refuses to submit to this woke doctrine is—just as we see here—publicly pilloried. This is an alarming indicator of the state of European democracy.

Equally unacceptable is the behaviour of several German MPs who have already announced their intention to take part in the banned Pride parade. Their deliberate disregard for Hungarian law is not only presumptuous; it also harms our country’s international reputation. While they call on others to join, these same actors ultimately hide behind the protection of their parliamentary immunity—a privilege certainly not meant for breaking laws abroad or staging political provocations on foreign soil.

The moral pose of those MPs—now styling themselves as defenders of freedom—is downright grotesque, for they belong to parties that in recent years have vigorously promoted mass immigration from predominantly Islamic countries, thereby endangering exactly those freedoms they hypocritically claim to defend today in Budapest.”
