“Spahn’s idea of rotating nuclear weapons around Europe is pure fantasy—neither France nor the United Kingdom will play along.
Still, we need a fundamental debate on who in Europe may deploy nuclear weapons for deterrence—or, in the worst case, for defence—and under what conditions. All the more so because President Macron’s position on the matter remains entirely unclear.
We also urgently need clarity on what so-called ‘nuclear sharing’ actually entails. Citizens across Europe—especially in Germany, NATO’s central hub—have a right to know how this pivotal security issue is being handled.
And that discussion must happen now—while we are still at peace.”
