Today, the Petitions Committee adopted the “Resolution on preserving the memory of the victims of the post-war communist period in Slovenia” with the votes of the ESN, PfE, ECR, and EPP. 17 MEPs voted in favor and 1 against. MEPs from the Left, Socialists, the Greens and the Liberals left the chamber immediately before the vote, sensing their impending defeat.

Marcin Sypniewski, ESN coordinator in the Petitions Committee stated:

“The fact that the left-wingers left the room shortly before the vote testifies to their lack of understanding of democracy. We as ESN have never left the chamber and always vote in the interests of the citizens, even if defeats are foreseeable. We represent the citizens. The left obviously do not.

The Resolution is in line with the values of the ESN group regarding the preservation of historical memory and the disclosure of all totalitarian crimes and was prompted by the scandalous decisions of the current Left-Green-Liberal Slovenian government and their majority in parliament. As stated in the Resolution, the Slovenian Government Commission on Concealed Mass Graves has identified over 750 locations of hidden gravesites, revealing a systematic effort to conceal these crimes, yet the places of execution have not been located and the victims have not been properly buried. More than 100,000 Slovenian residents who resisted the communist system and its ideological repression were victims of violence in various forms. These acts constituted serious violations of fundamental human rights, including the right to life, a fair trial and a decent burial.

With this resolution, ESN proposes restoring the aforementioned day, banning communist symbols as well, opening secret archives, and properly honoring communist victims as well!”

The ESN Group in the EU Parliament will continue to make policy in the interests of its voters. The victims of all totalitarian regimes require remembrance and commemoration! History must be scientific! Abuse of history such as the abolition of memorial days, closed archives and the suppression of historical facts due to current political goals is a disgrace to the victims!
