The European Court of Auditors criticizes the lack of transparency in the allocation of EU funding to non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Between 2021 and 2023, NGOs received around 7.4 billion euros, with 4.8 billion euros coming directly from the EU Commission. The report points out that there is no clear overview of how these funds are used, especially regarding lobbying activities and adherence to EU values by the NGOs. Additionally, there is no consistent definition of NGOs, further hindering transparency.
EU Member of Parliament Mary Khan of the ESN Group states:
“What has been uncovered here is a scandal: Left-wing networks are being funded with billions to push the ideological goals of the EU Commission and national governments – far from any democratic accountability.
The allocation of these funds is happening without any transparency and in the billions. The EU Commission repeatedly positions itself as a moral compass while harshly criticizing states that oppose it. However, the reality is quite the opposite. The EU Commission operates far from any democratic rules, as the latest report from the European Court of Auditors reveals.
As part of the ESN Group, we have made it our mission to expose this swamp. Whether this new scandal is just the tip of the iceberg remains to be seen. We will certainly continue to dig deeper.”
