In light of growing indications that several states may sign the Mercosur free trade agreement, the AfD delegation in the European Parliament has examined the potential impact on European agriculture. In this context, motions have been tabled and supported in Parliament that aim to introduce additional protective mechanisms for agricultural producers. The goal is to cushion possible burdens on farms, particularly in Germany, and to ensure fair conditions of competition.
Markus Buchheit, MEP for the ESN group, stated:
“Open markets can create prosperity. But the EU must effectively safeguard its agriculture whenever import surges push prices down and put farms at risk. Anyone granted access to the EU market must adhere to verifiable rules of the game — otherwise ‘free trade’ becomes a disadvantage for domestic businesses. Safeguards are the necessary safety net for our agriculture — in case the Mercosur agreement should enter into force.”
