“For years, Green politicians like Daniel Freund have been relentlessly agitating against Viktor Orbán and the Hungarian government. Because this crude bluster has so far attracted only limited public interest, Daniel Freund has concocted a new level of escalation: he claims the Hungarian prime minister gained access to Freund’s personal data with the help of spyware.
For his complaint against Viktor Orbán, Mr. Freund is receiving support from the Green lobby organization ‘Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte’ (GFF), which since 2018 has received donations from George Soros’s Open Society Foundations totaling 280,000 US dollars and is also co-funded from EU resources. A major donor to the GFF is the Digital Freedom Fund (DFF), which from 2022–2024 was supported with nearly 400,000 euros in EU funds. This is not a fight for civil liberties but a smear campaign by financial oligarchs and the European Commission against Hungary’s sovereignty.
With his absurd accusations against Viktor Orbán, Daniel Freund is not only damaging the traditionally good German-Hungarian relationship. His conspiracy narratives also lay the groundwork for further left-wing extremist acts of violence in Hungary. In doing so, Daniel Freund makes himself an enemy of democratic decency and of Europe’s core values.”
