On Wednesday, negotiators from the European Parliament and the Council agreed on a common EU methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector. Commenting on this, Volker Schnurrbusch MEP (ESN Group), who took part in the trilogue between Parliament, Commission and Council as shadow rapporteur, said:

“Together with the Patriots for Europe Group, the ESN Group has managed to prevent the worst. We still reject the overall project – especially the attempt to gradually force the transport sector under a green EU bureaucracy – but we have ensured that small and medium-sized enterprises cannot be obliged to hand over their primary vehicle data. This means haulage firms and transport service providers are spared a deep intrusion into their business secrets.

We have also made sure that there will be no penalty payments for companies, as demanded by left-wing parties. ESN stands for a realistic, pro-business policy that protects Europe’s SME sector instead of shackling it with ever more rules and red tape. Europe needs practical, workable solutions – not ideological experiments.”
