Mass regularisation of illegal migrants in Spain is a danger for all of Europe!

On Tuesday, the Spanish government launched an extraordinary mass regularisation of illegal migrants, from which around 500,000 people could benefit. ESN MEP Mary Khan (AfD) commented:

“While more and more EU Member States are waking up and pursuing an increasingly restrictive asylum policy, Spain’s left-wing government is initiating the mass regularisation of 500,000 illegal migrants without valid papers. This step makes a mockery of the rule of law and puts security and social cohesion at risk. Under the EU’s guaranteed freedom of movement, these people would then be able to travel unhindered to other Member States, meaning that the Spanish government is, in effect, unleashing a wave of illegal migration across Europe – with major risks and burdens for society, infrastructure and social security systems.

From a democratic perspective, this is also highly troubling, as the government is effectively aiming to create new voter groups for future elections – an approach that should be regarded as a deliberate attempt to influence the electoral process and that runs counter to fundamental democratic principles.

In light of this alarming development, our ESN Group today submitted a request to place this issue on the agenda of the next plenary session in Strasbourg. The EU must not stand by while ideologically driven migration experiments by individual governments are carried out at the expense of Europe’s population as a whole. If these excesses are not stopped immediately, a serious question arises as to how viable the EU’s guaranteed freedom of movement can remain under such conditions.”
