Co-President René Aust’s message from Bratislava

Today marked the conclusion of our external ESN group retreat in Bratislava.

Three intensive and inspiring days – including official receptions with the Slovak Minister of Culture, the Deputy Prime Minister, and the President of the national council.

We could feel the historical depth of Slovakia’s patriotic spirit. Perhaps it stems from the country’s eventful past: over the centuries, its lands were occupied by various foreign powers – and yet none succeeded in stripping the Slovak people of their homeland or their cultural identity.

Today, the Slovak nation stands proud, vibrant, and deeply rooted in its traditions – as it always has.

Slovakia can serve as a role model for us.

Together with Hungary, it represents a bastion of common sense – in a European Union where irrationality increasingly seems to carry the force of law.

We express our sincere thanks for the generous hospitality – and hope that Germany, too, will soon join the “Club of the Reasonable” within the EU.

For a politics rooted in the interests of one’s own people, yet always open to cooperation with neighbouring European nations – and for a Europe of fatherlands worthy of that name.
