Compromissen tussen concurrerende belangen \u2013 offshore windenergie, mariene ecologie, diepzeemijnbouw en de visserijsector \u2013 dreigen de doeltreffendheid van mogelijke oplossingen echter aanzienlijk te ondermijnen.<\/p>\n<p>Op EU-niveau zorgt de heersende ideologie rond de klimaatcrisis voor royale financiering van projecten zoals offshore windparken \u2013 vaak een onbetrouwbare bron van fluctuerende elektriciteit \u2013 terwijl verstandige initiatieven zoals ballastwaterbeheersystemen ter bestrijding van invasieve soorten financieel worden verwaarloosd. Bovendien leidt het vrijwillige karakter van veel toezeggingen in de praktijk tot zwakke handhaving en politieke willekeur.<\/p>\n<p>Siegbert Droese, ESN-co\u00f6rdinator in de Commissie visserij (PECH) van het Europees Parlement, gaf het volgende commentaar op UNOC3:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe VN-Oceaanconferentie die deze week in Nice plaatsvindt, zal naar verwachting het zogenaamde Actieplan van Nice voor de oceanen opleveren. Wij verwachten opnieuw de gebruikelijke aankondigingen van \u2018duurzaamheidsinitiatieven\u2019 door regeringen en bedrijven \u2013 maatregelen die vaak niet meer zijn dan PR-stunts, die noch effectief worden gecontroleerd, noch gehandhaafd.<\/p>\n<p>In plaats van alle mariene problemen in de wereld oppervlakkig aan te pakken zonder er ook maar \u00e9\u00e9n op te lossen, zou de conferentie zich moeten richten op de grootste bedreiging voor zowel de mariene ecologie als het levensonderhoud van de kleinschalige visserij: illegale, ongemelde en ongereglementeerde visserij.<\/p>\n<p>Toch lijken greenwashing-initiatieven zoals de zogenaamde \u2018blue carbon\u2019-markten en door de belastingbetaler gefinancierde offshore-windparken winstgevender te zijn. Deze onevenwichtigheid doet geen recht aan de werkelijke waarde en het belang van de oceanen als de meest essenti\u00eble hulpbron van onze
